Description:
Basic purpose is to provide interdisciplinary technical leadership for ecological impact assessment, environmental/natural resources policy analysis and planning, regulatory compliance (NEPA and State equivalents, ESA and CWA focus) and permit application.
The successful candidate will provide expertise in the following areas, but not limited to: biological resources-specific baseline studies, environmental impact analysis, and land use-related mitigation design and monitoring and evaluation plan; land/resource management planning and regulatory compliance/permitting processes and documentation; client-agency interface or multi-agency coordination/negotiation and public involvement and outreach; and proposal development, project/technical management (i.e., scope, schedule, budget, and quality), senior review and team competency development, and client relationships management.
Qualifications:
Required: Master’s or higher degree in applicable field (biological/environmental science, ecosystem ecology, natural resources management/planning, or a closely related discipline); 10 or more years of progressively responsible professional experience related to natural/biological resources management and environmental/land use planning; 6 or more years of direct experience in all aspects of NEPA compliance projects, incl. strategy development, alternatives formulation and analysis, impact assessment, mitigation planning, and public participation. Preferred: Work experience in environmental consulting business (or combination of agency/consulting) and client interactions with Bureau of Land Management and other land management agencies (U.S. Forest Service and/or National Park Service).
Technical proficiency and demonstrated experience (Northwest and/or Pacific States-specific preferred) in the following areas: natural/biological resources assessment (incl. special-status species and terrestrial, aquatic and wetland habitats), land use-related environmental impact analysis and mitigation/monitoring plan, land/resource management and habitat conservation plans, and public outreach; review, synthesize, and interpret natural/biological resources information; NEPA process and documentation (writing/reviewing CE, EA and EIS) and ESA requirements (writing/ reviewing BA and HCP/ITP) and USFWS consultation process; and project development (scope-of-work, schedule, and budget) and technical management (design and implement baseline surveys, data analysis and interpretations, environmental evaluation procedure and reporting). Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of applicable federal, state, and local natural resources-related laws, regulations, and ordinances are desired.
Strong strategic thinking and innovative problem-solving, demonstrable technical writing/editing ability, good interpersonal communication and oral presentation skills, and exceptional attention to details, planning and organizing, and quality (both work processes and products).

The CEC conducts a CEQA-equivalent environmental review of proposed thermal power plants. Consequently, the CEC needs people with education and experience in biological resources management and regulatory review to complete analyses of biological resources, conduct field visits, coordinate with other agencies, write biology sections for our environmental documents, and provide expert witness testimony on biology issues.
Desirable majors include Biology, Ecology, Natural Resources Management, Wildlife Biology, Zoology, and related fields.

Education

Duties
EDAW seeks a senior-level wildlife biologist to join its natural resources practice based in Sacramento, California. The candidate should have an interest in working on complex and controversial projects located throughout northern and central California. Projects are located in a wide variety of settings, including the High Sierra, Great Basin, Sierra foothills, Sacramento and San Joaquin Valleys, Delta, North Coast, and elsewhere. The successful applicant will be responsible for managing projects and performing technical work involving federal and California Endangered Species Act (ESA) permitting, resource management planning, and coordination with clients and regulatory agencies. Projects will involve innovative mitigation and conservation planning; multidisciplinary teamwork with biologists, planners, landscape architects, and restoration ecologists; and creative integration of natural resource analysis and project design.
Skill Requirements

Duties of the scientific aide may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Assist in conducting plant and animal surveys, research, and wildlife monitoring on Department-owned lands.
- Assist with live-trapping and handling of endangered animals under direct supervision.
- Identify plants and animals to species and record data accurately in the field.
- Perform habitat improvement and enhancement projects on Department-owned lands.

Mathews & Associates, a natural resources company, has openings for up to 3 Field Biologists and 1 Field Director, to conduct wildlife surveys following protocols for one or more of the following; spotted owls, great gray owls, goshawks, willow flycatchers and amphibians. Field surveys shall begin in May and continue through August, 2008.
Qualifications: Applicants should have knowledge of the habitats, protocols and one season of field survey experience for one or more species, and ability to identify similar species (i.e. barred owls, Cooper’s hawks). Preference shall be given to individuals that possess the field experience and a bachelor’s degree in biology or similar discipline. Candidates will be expected to have sufficient communication skills, including the ability to take detailed notes while in the field and organize data and field forms after leaving the field. Bighorn Institute (www.BighornInstitute.org) is a non-profit research and conservation organization established in 1982, and located in Palm Desert, CA. Our research is focused on the recovery of Peninsular bighorn sheep, which were federally listed as endangered in 1998. We maintain a captive breeding herd of Peninsular bighorn for population augmentation and conduct ongoing field studies of free-ranging bighorn.
JOB DESCRIPTION: A hardworking, dedicated individual with good fieldwork, writing and computer skills is needed immediately to fill the position of field biologist. This is a full time, permanent position with a combination of fieldwork and office work. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to tracking radio-collared bighorn via foot, caring for the captive herd of Peninsular bighorn, data entry, writing field reports, letters and newsletter articles, correspondence with members, general public, and resource agencies.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: B.S. or B.A. in biological sciences or related field. The successful applicant must be in very good physical condition and able to hike in a harsh desert environment where summer temperatures can exceed 110 F. Applicant must be willing to work long hours and perform a wide variety of tasks. Flexibility, a positive attitude and the ability to work independently as well as in team situations are essential. Telemetry, mapping, and GPS skills are desirable along with good writing skills and proficiency with Word, Excel, and Access.
SALARY: Starting salary is $2,400 per month working approximately 45 hrs per week, 5 days/week (includes weekends). Benefits include health insurance after 6 months, 1 week paid vacation after 1 year, and a retirement plan at 2 years. Single individual on-site housing may be available (no dogs allowed).

Intern needed to assist U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service at four very different Refuges in the greater San Francisco Bay Area from May 12 thru December 2008. This intern will primarily work at the Antioch Dunes National Wildlife Refuge, Ellicott Slough NWR, Salinas River NWR, and the proposed Alameda NWR but will also assist other refuges within the San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge Complex- website: http://www.fws.gov/sfbayrefuges/
Responsibilities include: Endangered plant and animal surveys (birds, amphibians, butterflies, mice, flowers and invertebrates), endangered and native plant seed collection, endangered plant propagation, non-native vegetation removal, avian predator surveys, vernal/seasonal pool sampling, cross support with other Refuges, data entry, report preparation, GPS, occasional early morning/late evening/weekend work, and working with staff and volunteers.
Required: valid driver’s license; comfortable driving long hours in traffic; bachelors degree or near completion; general knowledge of biological data gathering and techniques; wildlife observation and basic plant identification skills; physical ability to use varied equipment, vehicles, and tools to complete field work; ability to work in harsh weather and steep terrain; basic computer experience.

- Technical proficiency and demonstrated experience in the following specific areas:
- wetland inventory, delineation (using vegetation, soils, and hydrology), and functions/values assessment;
- wetland restoration or mitigation planning, design, and monitoring;
- plant identification (familiar with botanical dichotomous keys and major angiosperm plant families) and surveys (esp. rare and special status species);
- vegetation inventory and mapping;

- regulatory processes and permitting requirements.

Position Description :
Sr. Permitting Specialist (e.g., Clean Water Act Section 404, 401 and Fish and Game Code Section 1600 [et seq] compliance) within the Los Angeles Basin.
The following briefly outlines the positions roles and responsibilities. This is by no means exhaustive and you will develop your own path as you get a feel for the support URS has to give to you and the types of projects you enjoy pursuing and working on.
As a Sr. Permitting Specialist you will review the work of several staff members. They are mid level permitting specialists. You will report to the Natural Resources Division Manger; which will provide opportunities to coordinate and work closely with the other nine biologists within the Los Angeles Basin.
Briefly, you would be performing the following duties on a regular basis.
- Supervised marketing and business development related to watershed planning, wetland construction / restoration, and regulatory permitting.
- You would be a core member of a team of specialists that would work on Wetlands and Stream restoration in the western United States. This team includes a hydrologists/civil engineer, restoration ecologist, wildlife biologist, and fisheries biologist.
- Support the management of the Natural Resources Division and workload prioritization based on client and company needs.
- Work with the Division Manager and Senior Staff to forecast workload and plan and implement growth for the Natural Resources Division within the Los Angeles Basin.
- Establish and maintain client relationships for yourself and project managers you are working with.
- Assist in marketing our capabilities internally and externally to URS staff and helping the Natural Resources Division grow.
- Performing tasks associated with your technical field and interests on projects such as delineations, permitting, NEPA / CEQA assessments, and wetland/riparian restoration.

16 April, 2008: Seasonal Raptor Migration Counters, Banders, and Site Interpreters
(~40 positions) needed to staff fall migration projects in Texas, Arizona, Utah, Montana, New Mexico, Wyoming, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington, with trapping and banding occurring only at the latter five sites. Projects will run between mid-August and mid-November 2008, with specific dates varying by site. Applicants will be considered for two types of positions. Subject to site-specific funding availability and appropriate qualifications, experienced individuals may be recruited for Lead Observer and Lead Bander positions as independent contractors compensated with monthly wages ranging from $1,800-2,400. To be considered for such positions, applicants must have at least one and preferably two full seasons of prior experience either counting or trapping/banding migratory raptors. Otherwise, applicants will be recruited as volunteers that receive a per diem of $35 ($1050-1,085/month). All selected applicants also will receive a $150 site-access travel stipend, and reimbursement for other work related travel and expenses. All applicants must have good eyesight, be in good physical condition, be able to endure long hours in the field and variable weather, have demonstrated birding and raptor-in-flight I.D. skills, and must be able to work well in a team environment. Observers will work in teams of 2 or 3 to conduct daily, standardized counts of the migrations. All trapper/bander applicants must have experience with bird capture, handling, and banding techniques, preferably involving raptors. All Site Interpreters will be recruited as volunteers and will serve as general project assistants with a primary responsibility for facilitating visitor interactions and providing basic environmental interpretation for guests. Weather permitting, all crewmembers will work six days per week, with additional project support provided by qualified, local volunteers. Most projects are in high-elevation remote areas, experience highly variable weather, and require camping on site, with alternative days-off and weather accommodations generally provided in nearby local communities. At remote project sites, all crewmembers must supply their own camping gear; basic housing will be provided in Texas.

Primary Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

WILDLIFE BIOLOGISTS in KERN AND KINGS COUNTIES. Garcia and Associates (GANDA), a natural and cultural resources consulting firm, is seeking to hire up to 3 biologists to conduct blunt-nosed leopard lizard (BNLL) surveys starting April 14. Surveys entail walking transects (10-30 meters apart) and stopping periodically to scan for BNLL using binoculars. Surveys start at sunrise and continue while air temperature is between 25C-35C. FIELD RESEARCH ASSISTANTS (2) needed for study of acoustic disturbances to bird and carnivore communities in Sierra National Forest, in the central Sierra Nevada mountains of California. Primary responsibilities include establishing study sites, conducting vegetation surveys, installing acoustic monitoring equipment, conducting bird (point count) surveys, and conducting carnivore (track plate) surveys. This project will provide a rich and challenging opportunity to build experience in diverse field techniques, explore the central Sierra Nevada range, and interact with a multidisciplinary team of scientists and environmental professionals.
Qualifications:

• Ability to navigate off-trail using GPS or map and compass

Housing will be provided in a rented cabin or Forest Service property with access to basic facilities, and some camping may be necessary. 17 March 2008: Biological Technician, Desert Tortoise Surveys, Fort Irwin, California
Description: Biological field technicians (8-12) needed to conduct desert tortoise surveys in the western Mojave Desert. Technicians will need to attend a 2 to 3 day training session prior to beginning work. Training will enable personnel to identify desert tortoise sign, learn searching protocols and data entry procedures. Upon successful completion of training, technicians will work in crews of 4 to 6 personnel walking approximately 10 km of transects per day. Work will be conducted in remote desert areas, some of which will be in steep, mountainous terrain. Standard work period will be 10 days on, 3-4 days off, with 8 to 10 hour days. Working 10 straight days, walking 10+ km/day in the desert is physically and mentally demanding; do not apply if you think you may not be able to conduct the work. Temperatures in May will exceed 100°F.
Qualifications: Applicants need to be to be self-sufficient in the field. Primitive camping, often without phone service or facilities required. Must have 4WD or high-clearance (at a minimum) vehicle and personal camping gear. Camp will be 20-30 miles from nearest town (Barstow, CA). Experience with GPS, walking straight lines, data entry onto PDA’s preferred. Need people willing to learn correct field and data entry techniques and can maintain concentration while walking transects.
Salary: $25/hour, no per diem, government mileage when on site.

Research assistants (2-3) needed 15 March - 10 October 2008 for a Swainson's hawk crop/habitat foraging study in the Central Valley California. Start date may be flexible. DUTIES: Assist professional staff in a variety of resource assessment surveys for animal and plant species. QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must possess a four-year degree or be attending a college or university where they possess or are pursuing a degree in wildlife or fisheries biology, natural resource management, zoology, forestry, or other similar area, or have at least one year of experience in surveying, studying or evaluating wildlife populations. Necessary experience and skills include ability to drive 4x4 vehicles, operate project equipment (digital equipment, computers, lab equipment). Desirable previous experience includes small mammal trapping, aquatic surveys, identification of herps and birds of central coast area, use of Access, Excel, Word software. Must be able to work independently in back country, sometime in very hot conditions. Current driver*s license and good driving record required.
