Posted 06-05-2005 Seasonal Field Assistants Job Descriptiong Location: Endangered Species Recovery Program, Turlock, CA Full-time temporary positions ending on or before September 30, 2005 through the Endangered Species Recovery Program at California State University, Stanislaus Foundation. Dependent upon job performance and funding, there is a possibility of reappointment beyond September 30, 2005. Primary work site - Turlock, California. THESE ARE NOT STATE FUNDED POSITIONS. Duties: The field assistant in this position is required to participate in the conduct of research on demography, ecology, controlled propagation, translocation, and other aspects of the biology of small mammals and other vertebrates, especially rabbits and woodrats; and to assist the principal investigator with routine office tasks including filing, typing, errands and vehicle maintenance. Work activities include capturing, marking, handling, radio tracking, recognizing animal tracks and sign, collecting biopsy samples, and necropsying of dead animals. The field assistant will use radio telemetry equipment including radio collars, scanner-receivers and various antenna designs, geographic positioning systems (GPS), automated infra-red triggered cameras, and video probes. The field assistant in this position will work in urban as well as remote locations, including occasional overnight camping; s/he will often work at night, in inclement weather, and walk up to 12 miles per day in rugged terrain. The assistant is expected to apply skills in the use of Windows-based computers, including word processing, data entry, database management, and Internet use, and also apply basic skills in experimental design, statistical analysis, and scientific writing. Persons selected for this position must possess proficient written and verbal communication skills; interact positively with the general public; work well both independently and in team situations; be able to work outdoors in all types of weather; possess a valid driver’s license; and be able to obtain a California defensive driver’s certificate. Description: This professional position has lead responsibility for the regional implementation of Defenders of Wildlife*s national advocacy outreach program. Through constituency building and public education the program will strengthen the group*s advocacy of national issue priorities and increase long-term regional support for wildlife conservation. General responsibilities include: outreach to diverse constituencies, mobilizing and enlisting Defenders* existing supporters; expanding support by the general public; implementing effective accountability efforts for members of Congress and ongoing media education. Project includes night occupancy surveys as well as day visits to monitor nests. Qualifications include being able to follow a detailed protocol, take complete field notes, enter data, work well with others, and spend long hours in the woods in a beautiful area. Background and Job Description: The U.S. Forest Service is hiring seasonal biological technicians for a long-term amphibian monitoring program focusing on the Mountain yellow-legged frog (Rana muscosa) and the Yosemite toad (Bufo canorus). These jobs will predominantly consist of field work in the Sierra Nevada at elevations of 5,000-12,000 feet. Primary duties include: locating and traveling to selected sample sites; surveying lakes, ponds, meadows, and streams for amphibians; and collecting habitat data. Many of the sites will be remote, requiring backpacking trips of up to 8-days duration. There is some office work during the season. Some preparatory office work may be available in early season and data entry or cleanup at the end of the season. We are looking for applicants with a background and/or high level of interest in herpetology and/or aquatic biology who are in good physical condition and willing to endure high altitude, temperature extremes, rough terrain, and the occasional mosquito (ok, maybe thousands). Experience in amphibian surveys and identification is desired. Ability to get along with crew members for prolonged periods in backcountry is a must. Posted 01-04-2005 EXPERIENCED RAPTOR MIGRATION COUNTER needed to conduct multi-site, exploratory migration counts in the vicinity of Ely, Nevada from 15 March through 25 April 2005. Person will work alone as a volunteer receiving a non-taxable daily stipend of $40/day, a $150 travel stipend to help defray the cost of travel to and from the project area, and reimbursement for other work-related travel. Surveys will involve camping in remote locations much of the time, with USFS housing also available in Ely (no cost to surveyor). Surveys will involve scouting for concentrations and then rotating observations among 3-5 sites every few days (all areas within roughly 30 miles of Ely). The intent of the survey is to provide information needed to help determine the efficacy of developing wind power generation facilities in the region. Similar surveys were conducted in the area during fall 2004. Requirements for the position include at least one full season of raptor migration counting experience in North America or the equivalent across multiple seasons; personal, rugged 4WD vehicle for use during surveys; sturdy four-season camping gear and tolerance for work in widely variable weather conditions; and must be in excellent physical condition. Posted 01-04-2005 Field Environmental Education Intern wanted for HawkWatch International's (HWI) spring raptor migration study site in the Sandia Mountains near Albuquerque, NM. March 5 to May 5, 2005. Applicant must be available for entire season, should provide their own binoculars (8 to 10 power), and be able to endure long hours in the field. Work is intensive, often in harsh weather, and is for 8 hrs/day, 6 days/wk, including weekends. Strenuous daily hikes to access the site are approximately 1 hour each way. Primary responsibilities include: welcome visitors, explain HWI and our mission, provide interpretive programs on raptor ecology and migration, help identify birds to novices, deflect distractions away from observation crew, and guide visitors throughout their stay. Education Intern will become involved in raptor banding and handling on an "as needed" basis. Additional duties include: promote field site visitation through media and other resources throughout the surrounding area; handle merchandise sales and donations; promote HWI membership; collaborate with classroom educator on field trips and other special off-site programs or events.
